Arborvitae shines in the winter landscape and thrives in warm climates where disease can be a challenge for evergreens. Going a step further, these plants come in various sizes and colors to meet the needs of homeowners. The First Editions® arborvitae collections include four varieties that have been selected for their tight habit, durability, and versatility. They also have the multi-season interest and structure that homeowners desire in their yards, especially in winter. Here’s a breakdown of each variety and how to use them.
Lemon Burst®
Lemon Burst® catches the eye with its bright new yellow growth that continues all summer long, even in full sun. This moderately sized arborvitae has a broadly conical form and tight habit, making it easy to maintain. As a bonus, the foliage takes on hues of orange during winters in the north and has shown impressive resistance to winter burn and Passalora/Cercospora needle blight. Lemon Burst® is the perfect size to use near patios and in foundation plantings.
Technito®
If you’re looking for a smaller version of ‘Techny,’ consider this more compact alternative called Technito®, which has the same attractive dark green color, but remains 8-10’ tall with a 4-5’ spread. Another improvement is the denser habit that requires less shearing to maintain its compact and pyramidal shape. A great choice for privacy hedges and specimen plantings.
Planet Earth®
Planet Earth® goes a step further with a perfectly rounded, dense habit that requires no shearing and grows 3-5’ tall and wide. Both Planet Earth® and Lemon Burst® were bred in Georgia, making these selections ideal for both warm and cool climates. Another similarity to Lemon Burst® is the foliage that is resistant to Passalora/Cercospora needle blight. This compact selection is perfect along walkways and foundations.
Tall Guy®
Our next variety features an upright, columnar form. Tall Guy® was selected for its moderate to fast growth rate that is an improvement over ‘Emerald’ in the landscape and production. Like several other members of this collection, Tall Guy® was bred in Georgia and grows well in warm and cool climates with strong resistance to winter burn and Passalora/Cercospora needle blight.
This variety to add extra height and structure along a patio, driveway, or as a vertical backdrop for other shrubs. And for growers, you only need a single liner to quickly produce a full plant with a single leader. This hastens the finishing times and reduces your input cost, while giving you a sturdy plant.
