Plant a Tree Today for
Cleaner Air Tomorrow!

At Bailey Nurseries, we’ve been growing the finest trees and shrubs for over 100 years. Choose from some of the industry's best-performing and most-tested varieties, while also taking pride in knowing that, by planting a tree, you’re helping the environment.

Why are Trees Cool?

  • Trees filter pollutants, absorb carbon dioxide and help fight erosion.
  • A healthy tree cools the air equivalent to ten room-sized air conditioners operating 20-hours a day (USDA Forest Service).
  • Trees planted in urban areas can help reduce heating and cooling costs by 20% (center for Urban Forest Research).
  • Trees properly placed around buildings can reduce air conditioning needs by 30% and can save 20-50% in energy used for heating (USDA Forest Service).
  • Trees add curb appeal to your home and can add 15% to your property’s value.

Tree Planting Guide

Bareroot

  1. It’s best to plant your new tree within 24 hours. If that is not possible, keep the roots in a bag, in a cool, dark place such as a garage, protected from freezing and drying out.
  2. Before planting fill a large container with water to cover the roots and soak the roots for several hours but not longer than 24.

Container and Bareroot

  1. Dig a hole at least 6” wider than the root system or container the plant came in. Some trimming of a bareroot tree’s roots is acceptable if they’re unusually long or damaged. With a container tree roughen the sides and bottom of the root ball and cut any encircling roots.
  2. Set your tree in the hole making sure that the root flare is 1” above the top of the hole. With a container tree never plant deeper than the existing soil level the tree was planted within the container.
  3. With your tree in the hole fill half way with soil and water until the soil looks “soupy”; this will help remove any air pockets. Fill the rest of the hole with soil and tamp down; soil level should run towards the trunk.
  4. Water thoroughly once every 7-10 days; over watering is detrimental to the trees growth. Mulching around the tree is recommended to help retain moisture. Be careful to leave the area 4” around the bottom of the trunk mulch free.
  5. Keep your tree well watered up until freezing in its first growing season and apply a slow release fertilizer in the spring of the second growing season.
